Congratulations are in order for Amelia Smith!

Amelia transferred to Broward County public schools from St May’s Jamaica in 2021 during COVID. She then enrolled in South Plantation High School in the 11th grade, which compounded her challenges for meeting the graduation standard, having only 20 months before the end of 12th grade.

Amelia described the many difficulties of online learning in 2021/2022 school year. She missed the in-person support from her teachers, and her friends. She had many courses to makeup that her peers had completed in 9th and 10th grade, while she struggled with the increase in U.S. Reading standards and the required material. Her greatest challenge would prove to be meeting the Algebra and Reading test requirements.

Amelia attributed her success to hard work, her determination to succeed, and the support she received from Thrive. She listed several services provided that were pivotal to her success including tutoring, creating a schedule for time management, accountability check-ins, review of the graduation criteria, assistance finding community service opportunities, technology support for online courses, mentorship, signing up for test and test waivers, and encouragement when she felt like giving up.

Amelia is celebrating being a high school graduate and looks forward to being an entrepreneur working as a beauty salon owner and Cosmetologist.
